Writing About the Chicago Cubs and Looking at the Team’s Past

All of the sites are starting to ramp up their season previews and one of the more interesting installments comes from Beyond the Boxscore. In their Cubs preview, you get a nice sabermetric analysis of the Cubs and the end result is that they predict the Cubs to win the NL Central again. There’s a lot of talk about Geovany Soto becoming the full time, full season catcher as well as what would happen if the Cubs finally nabbed Brian Roberts from the Orioles. There’s also some question marks at the back end of the rotation and the bullpen is the usual mess but there’s enough there to definitely win a weak division.
In a recent mailbag column, Carrie Muskat talks about how the Cubs did make a play on Johan Santana, but because Johan wanted to play for a east coast team and one that played spring ball in Florida, that the talks didn’t last very long. I guess one bright spot out of all that was that no Central team was going to get him so we’ll just have to worry about Johan a couple of times a year and come playoff time.
She also talks about the Cubs playing in the final Hall of Fame game as well as Felix Pie’s chances in centerfield. There’s also a funny email from someone in there purporting to wanting to buy the team.
