Everyone plays better on their bobblehead night

Kosuke Fukudome has had a rough May. Going into Tuesday night’s ball game Fukudome was hitting a pedestrian .256, down from his .305 average during the first month of the season.

But the power of his very own bobblehead day inspired Mr. Fukudome to blow up, going 2-for-3 with a walk and RBI during the Cubs’ 3-1 win over the Dodgers. He also found some time to make a solid diving catch in right field.

If only all of us could have at least one bobblehead day.

Speaking of having a day all to yourself, while the fans enjoyed promotional bobbleheads, the Cubs enjoyed a promotional t-shirt giveaway. Via the Sun Times:

Cubs pitcher Sean Gallagher had an unexpected box waiting for him in the Cubs’ clubhouse Tuesday afternoon when he got to the ballpark.

Inside were T-shirts with the Iowa Cubs logo on the front and Gallagher’s name and No. 36 on the back — and teammates immediately started snapping them up and putting them on.

That’s pretty cool. When I start my new internship next week, I’m totally walking into the office with a box of t-shirts that have my name on the back. Hopefully I can promote the same team unity atmosphere.

Anyway, much like Fukudome, Gallagher didn’t disappoint those who benefited from the giveaway. He pitched seven innings and gave up just one run and four hits during a blistery, cold evening in Chicago.

His performance was very clutch since his teammates didn’t bother scoring until the bottom of the seventh inning. Thanks to a Blake DeWitt error at third base off a Mike Fontenot gound ball, Ryan Theriot scored to tie the game. Then, Aramis Ramirez was money at the plate, driving in the go-ahead run by lining a 3-2 pitch back up the middle of the field. Fukudome’s RBI double closed out Chicago’s scoring.

Carlos Marmol and Kerry Wood finished the game for the Cubs, although Marmol made it interesting by loading the bases in the eighth before retiring the final batter. Chicago gets one more nationally televised game Wednesday night before a four game set with the Rockies over the weekend.

Unfortunately, I will be spending most of my time catching Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals, featuring my Detroit Red Wings.

Go Wings!
