Writing About the Chicago Cubs and Looking at the Team’s Past
[powered by WordPress.]
After a 10-game homestand, North Siders must say goodbye (sniff) to their team for seven whole days while they make two road trips to Houston and then, yes, Pittsburgh. But before the Cubs left for the week, they made sure to end the homestand on a good note with a 4-3 win over the Pirates.
Chicago went 8-2 over those ten games and in both losses fell by just one run. The Cubs began the homsetand two games back in the National League Central. Now, they’re two games ahead. So it’s safe to say playing at Wrigley is a good thing for the Cubs. That and playing the Pirates.
Alfonso Soriano (1-for-3), Ronny Cedeno (1-for-4), Kosuke Fukudome (1-for-3) and Reed Johnson (0-for-1) drove in all four of Chicago’s runs and Mark DeRosa was the only other player to get a hit for the offensively challenged Cubs. But you don’t need a waterfall when a stream will do. Thanks to Jason Marquis, the Cubs didn’t have to be the ‘27 Yankees.
Marquis went six strong, allowing just two earned runs (three runs total) while striking out three. That, ladies and gents, is a quality start. It’s also just Marquis’ second win, the first one coming against, you guessed it, the Pittsburgh Pirates. Oh, and assuming manager Lou Piniella doesn’t change the order of the rotation, Marquis will get another crack at the Pirates this coming weekend. Sweet.
So now the fans must go seven whole days without root, root, rooting for the home team.
Don’t worry, you could always catch the Chicago Sky during this road trip.
