Writing About the Chicago Cubs and Looking at the Team’s Past

No Fukudome? No problem for the Cubs.
Considering how bad the Pirates have been against the North Siders, Lou Piniella could have started my brother’s Little League team and still won.
For the second straight afternoon the Cubs dropped 13 runs on Pittsburgh in a 13-6 win. Even worse for the Pirates: going back to last season this is the third straight series the Cubs have swept and it’s the ninth straight win.
That’s assault and battery in most states.
Not surprisingly two Cubbies had a great day at the plate. Ryan Theriot went 4-for-5 and drove in two RBI. Aramis Ramirez did two better, going 4-for-4 with four RBI. And while he didn’t add to his home run total, Derreck Lee (2-for-4) drove in two more RBI to give him a team-leading total of 17.
Ryan Dempster wasn’t dominant but he allowed just three earned runs over five innings while striking out three. His record improves to 3-0.
The Cubs are now in first place by a half game in the National League Central. They will now play two real Major League clubs over the next four days. The Mets make the trek to Wrigley for the next two games and then the Cubs will travel to Colorado for a two-game set Wednesday and Thursday.
