Writing About the Chicago Cubs and Looking at the Team’s Past

June 20, 1908 at the Polo Grounds
Giants 4, Cubs 0 (32-19)
A rough home crowd helped the Giants walk away with the shutout win. All four runs came with two outs in the seventh inning and if the first run is suspect, then all of them should be. Doyle leaned into a pitch that was right over the plate and that drove in the first run. Faced with an angry home crowd, the umpire gave the batter the base and the run despite the blantant attempt at a free pass. A couple of singles and a passed ball later and the game was out of hand.
Outside of that, Chick Fraser threw a solid game. He gave up the four runs on six hits and five walks with one strikeout. It didn’t help that he was going head to head with the great Christy Mathewson.
The Cubs were held to just three singles and a walk. Nobody reached base twice and in all, Mathewson struck out seven Cubs.
