Writing About the Chicago Cubs and Looking at the Team’s Past

Ten years ago I was just 12, smoking was banned in all California bars and restaurants, Bill Clinton emphatically promised the nation he did not have sexual relations with Monica Lewinsky and Google was founded.
It was also ten years ago that Kerry Wood exploded onto the baseball scene with his 20K performance against the Houston Astros.
May 6 will be the ten-year anniversary of the event and MLB.com’s Carrie Muskrat writes about Wood looking back at the moment he became a star. Unfortunately the article doesn’t have any Dock Ellis revelations but it makes one stop and realize how much has changed since that game. It also conjures up some “What ifs …”
Like what if Wood’s body didn’t give up on him multiple times? Or, what if Wood had never struck out 20 batters that day?
It’s sad to think about all the potential he had to be one of the all-time great starting pitchers in baseball until his injury problems. Fortunately Wood doesn’t seemed phased by the setbacks and he has embraced his closers role.
Still, it’s exciting to go back to that day when all fans had was the hope that this youngin’ would be the ace to lead Chicago to a World Series.
